Safety and durability are two primary concerns for the flooring systems installed in plants, factories, and other industrial settings. Facilities used for manufacturing need flooring that is highly-durable, reliable, and abrasion resistant. The surface needs to be practical, easy to clean, and compliant with all worker safety guidelines and regulations. Epoxy, polyurethane, and other resinous floor coatings can provide a durable, safe, and hygienic flooring system when installed on correctly prepared concrete slabs.
Concrete alone is rarely sufficient, as it easily chips and cracks. It is also porous, making it vulnerable to water damage, and allowing spilled substances to contaminate the substrate. Over time, unfinished concrete will wear under traffic and can produce a dust that is harmful to humans when inhaled. Epoxy and other resinous flooring systems are installed as a liquid, resulting in a seamless, durable surface that is protected against wear and tear.
Tennant 25 HTS is the premier 25 mil system with a satin finish. This three layer, high performance system is high solids, with low odor and low VOC. It is applied with two coats of epoxy and topcoated with a light stable, chemical resistant urethane, Eco-HTS™ 100 (High Traffic System), providing slight texture for added slip resistance and durability. This system can be applied indoors during working hours.
Tennant 25 WG-240 is a 25 mil, three layer, economical system with a gloss finish. This system is applied with two coats of epoxy and topcoated with WearGuard™-240. This system offers the best value as it is cost effective and extremely durable. With under 250g/L VOC’s this system meets VOC regulations, but is best applied during shut down applications and with proper ventilation. This system is not light stable.
Eco-Crete IF (Iron Fill) is a one layer, 3/8" - 1/2" thick, trowel applied, mortar system. This system has properties that exceed those of typical concrete and is meant to withstand impact, abrasion, chemical exposure, high traffic and abuse, in areas that require thermal shock resistance.
Tennant Flake RB (Random Broadcast) is a three layer, cost effective, UV-resistant decorative flake system. A background color of epoxy is applied, followed by a broadcast of randomly scattered decorative vinyl flakes.
Tennant Flake SB (Single Broadcast) is a four layer system with a broadcast of vinyl decorative flake that covers the entire floor. This UV-resistant system is available in either a gloss or satin finish. Choose from a wide variety of textures, solid flake and flake blend color options.
Tennant Heavy Duty is a five layer, nominal 1/4" epoxy mortar system used to resurface interior concrete floors. This UV-resistant system is available in either a gloss, orange-peel or satin finish.
Tennant Heavy Duty Flake is a six layer, nominal 1/4" decorative epoxy mortar system used to resurface interior concrete floors. A vinyl flake broadcast is applied, covering the entire floor, to provide a decorative flooring system with texture. This UV-resistant system is available in either a gloss or satin finish. Choose from a wide variety of textures, solid flake and flake blend color options.
Tennant Heavy Duty Quartz is a six layer, nominal 1/4" decorative epoxy mortar system, used to resurface interior concrete floors. A quartz broadcast is applied covering the entire floor, providing a decorative and durable flooring system with texture. This UV-resistant system is available in either a gloss or satin finish. Choose from a wide variety of textures, solid quartz and quartz blend color options.
Tennant Mechanical Room is a five coat, flexible waterproofing membrane system. This system consists of a flexible primer, two flexible build coats, a reinforcement coat and satin urethane topcoat. This flexible waterproofing system is both UV and chemical resistant and offers high wearability with slight texture.
A five coat, nominal 1/6" semi self-leveling methyl methacrylate (MMA) system with a full quartz or flake broadcast, sealed with two UV-stable MMA topcoats
Tennant Shop Floor DB (Double Broadcast) is a four layer, nominal 1/8" system, with a double broadcast of silica sand. This satin finish workhorse system provides additional thickness and more durability for high traffic and high abuse areas.
Tennant Shop Floor SB (Single Broadcast) is a four layer, nominal 1/16" system, with a broadcast of silica sand. This economical, satin finish workhorse system provides durability and slip resistance for high traffic areas.
Tennant Wall Reinforced is a four layer solid color wall system, with an imbedded fiberglass mat. This system provides additional durability and reinforcement and has a satin finish.
Facilities used for manufacturing typically need to be capable of supporting heavy machinery without breaking down or cracking. Frequent foot traffic is to be expected, as well as impacts from forklifts and other heavy vehicles. The flooring system needs to be strong enough to support the weight of these loads and resistant to other types of surface damage. Well-specified and installed commercial flooring and coatings for the manufacturing industry is customized with consideration for each operation’s unique environment and activities.
Depending on the type of product being manufactured in the facility, harsh chemicals and other dangerous substances could be in use. The right flooring system should both be able to withstand contact with highly corrosive materials and allow for safe and effective cleanup in the event of a spill. Resinous floor coatings are nonporous, so they do not absorb liquids the same way that an uncoated cement surface would. Fluid-applied installation allows for a nearly unbroken surface virtually free of seams or grout lines, so the natural vulnerabilities of tile and other systems can often be avoided.
One of the most important elements of helping to protect worker safety through flooring is slip resistance. Slippery floors can lead to falls that can cause serious injuries, and the floor itself is the first line of defense against these accidents. In some settings, static control can also be an important safety factor. Furthermore, OSHA and other regulatory bodies establish rules for how a space must be laid out, utilized, and labeled, in the effort to keep employees as safe as possible. As a result, it may be necessary to designate different areas using a different type of flooring, or to include colored boundaries, markings or directional text within the floor itself, drawing attention to potential hazards.
Fortunately, epoxy flooring and related systems are highly customizable, allowing for a wide range of both practical and aesthetic features. With a wide variety of color and design options, when installed by a professional contractor, a high-quality flooring system can be both function and attractive.
