In most areas, customers have multiple choices when it comes to their grocery shopping needs. For supermarkets and grocery stores, part of staying competitive means providing an inviting atmosphere and a floor plan that is intuitive and easy to follow. When choosing a grocery store flooring system, it is also important to keep in mind the type of traffic the floor will be experiencing on a daily basis, as well as how it will be cleaned, and any ongoing maintenance concerns. At Tennant Coatings, we understand that time spent repairing a deteriorating supermarket floor or performing maintenance tasks like waxing or polishing is time when the grocery store is not serving customers. That’s why we specialize in highly durable and low maintenance epoxy, urethane, and MMA floor coatings – so you can stay open longer hours without worrying about costly maintenance, repairs, and touch ups.

Many grocery stores are open 7 days a week, with some operating 24 hours. Even those that have daily downtime may experience a relative consistent, flow of customers entering the store, many of whom push heavy carts up and down the aisles. For a supermarket or grocery flooring system to function well, it needs to be able to withstand heavy foot and shopping cart traffic, as well as forklifts, dollies and other equipment used to take in deliveries and restock. Epoxy floor coatings are ideal for the job. This type of flooring, depending upon the selected system, can significantly increase the bearing strength and abrasion resistance of the concrete slab over which they are installed.
Resinous floor coatings for grocery stores are also a more hygienic and easy-to-clean option that can support microbe and pathogen control efforts. Where customers and employees are continually handling food items, occasional spills inevitably occur. The ability to quickly, safely, and thoroughly clean the flooring system is of the utmost importance. Spills that aren’t immediately dealt can contribute to the potential buildup of harmful microbes and bacteria, and can contribute to dangerous slip-and-fall hazards. Luckily, resinous floors enable installers to customize the level of slip-resistance in different areas to meet store managers’ needs. Epoxy and similar flooring systems are fluid-applied, curing to form a level, virtually seamless surface without the numerous grout or tile lines that are almost impossible to effectively clean. In particular, urethane mortar floor coatings are strong enough to withstand even the harshest chemical cleaners and are thermal shock resistant.
Another advantage of resinous grocery store and supermarket flooring is that it is versatile enough to be used throughout the majority of the store, from retail areas to public restrooms, from food preparation spaces to warehouse and storage rooms. Well-specified and installed resinous systems can make it easy to clean the floor as well as to transport products on wheeled carts, and can help bring cohesion to the store’s aesthetics throughout different departments. An important element of retaining customers is providing a positive and enjoyable shopping experience. Epoxy and urethane floor coatings, available in a wide variety of solid colors and decorative chip blends, allow you to choose the design, color, and graphics that are right for your store. Because it’s so easy to incorporate multiple colors into a pattern or design, the way the floor is laid out can to help designate walkaways and support an intuitive traffic flow.
